New Semester

Did I ever mentioned about this?

My 2nd semester had started for about 3 weeks now. And a very tight schedule keeps my life hectic and busy. Even when I have no graphic class this semester. I'm taking 20.5 credit hours this semester. Architectural Design 2, History and Theory of Architecture 2, Building Construction and Material 2, ' Science and System, Islamic Worldview and last but not least Bahasa Melayu Kerjaya.

I'm taking Architectural Design 2 with the same lecturer. But with harder and harder projects. Now as we entering our 4th week, we actually have to make a shelter and build it out of recycled things. We have to do the workbook, presentation boards and a human scale model where at least a person can live in it. It is like building a shelter for homeless people. Submission date is on 8th March 2013. Even tough it is stated that we must build the shelter from recycled things, some seniors said majority of them actually bought the material. Some of them even spent almost 1k for this project. Isn't it crazy?

For History and Theory of Architecture 2, the lecturer is different from last semester. I'm not a big fan of learning history. I have to admit that I fall asleep quite a few times during the classes. And we only had 3 classes yet. I don't want to blame the lecturer for making me bored because even when I was in school history wasn't my favourite subject and it still isn't now. But I'm interested in learning history if there are lots of pictures and if I can really imaging what I'm actually learning. My brain gets tired easily when I try to pay full attention to the lecturer. That's why I sleep in the class. Sometimes I only look at the lecturer and the slideshows but I'm not paying attention. My mind is at somewhere else. Most of the times, at home. Thinking how good it is if I can spend times at home then in the lecture theater not focusing at all. But only sometimes. Sometimes, I do actually focus. Don't get me wrong. I just don't want to be seen sleeping all the time in  the class.  That is the reason why I need to think about something else.

And I do the same thing in Building Construction and Material 2 class and Islamic Worldview class. BCM 2 is taught by different lecturer too. It's just the same with the last semester. Except the fact that the lecturer gives us homework every week and we also have assignments from the same subject and other subjects. Homework really makes me feel like schooling again but the fact that the lecturer is not like any teacher in school did changed my mind. You know what I mean? In university, we need to find our own way of learning and we can't expect the lecturers give us everything like how teachers did when we were in school. It's not hard, we just need to find books and surf the internet.

Environmental Science and System is on the other hand. It's totally opposite. The subject is interesting and the lecturer has a good sense of humour. I barely sleep in the class. Like seriously. Madam is a very good lecturer, I have to admit even I got hurt by her during my crit session last semester. Let bygones be bygones. We learn about geography and science. Which makes me miss school. It was more than two years without learning anything related directly to science and now I got that chance again. And hopefully I can perform well in this subject.

Last but not least Bahasa Melayu Kerjaya. When we did our prereg, we did chose the lecturer based on the recommendation of some friends. But things turned differently. Our first class was cancelled. The second class, the lecturer that we hope for turned up. The class was running smoothly. It was very funny since we never have class conducted fully in Bahasa Melayu in IIUM. I remembered there was a classmate raised his hand and asked a question started with 'bagaimanakah?'. The whole class was laughing. But then, my friend texted me during CNY holiday saying that the lecturer's name is changed in the portal. I thought it was like a mistake or something. It wasn't. The third class, the new lecturer turned up. We actually thought he is one of our classmates. Then, when he put his bag on the desk at the front of the class, we immediately know he's actually our lecturer. My friend said "Kan dah kata...".

But whoever the lecturer is, the class is still interesting. I mean like ESS, the last time we learnt Bahasa Melayu was in school. The best part is we're not learning about KOMSAS, tatabahasa and how to write an essay anymore. We learn on how to communicate, present, write proposal and formal letter. Things related to career. This lecturer has a very deep interest in Bahasa Melayu. I don't even know there is a young man who interested in learning Bahasa Melayu until PhD. I'm impressed. I knew there is one of my seniors taking Pengajian Bahasa Melayu in UM (just like my lecturer). I thought it was so boring. My lecturer did changed my perspective. But I'm kind of sleepy in his class because it starts at 8. And we never had any class starts at 8 during last semester. The worst part, last night we had Halaqah until 10p.m. and we got a meeting on 10.30 until 12 a.m. We tucked in the bed around 1 a.m. Today, we woke up and went to class at 8. Luckily, the evening class finished early and I got some sleep in the evening even tough I knew it is bad to sleep in the evening.

That's all I think. I couldn't believe that I can write this long. But whatever.

My homesick is getting worse. When I was in CFS, I cried a few times because I always left alone. My ex-roommates' schedules were totally opposite mine. Here, I always have my friends around me, so I'm not always thinking about my family and home until I cry. But I still feel homesick. Which is hard for me to explain. Maybe because my nieces are at home too right now. Aww, I miss Aisyah and Maryam. Even my roommates get bored of me when I start talking about my nephews and nieces. I'm an aunt. I have that motherly instinct. What can I do? LOL.

That's all.
Wassalam.

p.s. I also have halaqah and Tilawah class. Islamic Worldview and Bahasa Melayu Kerjaya (Sains dan Teknologi) are university requirement subjects.

That funny moment

Some funny story.

Mummy was busy locking the door and the gate. She forgot to bring little sister's shoes. She asked 'Did we bring little sister's shoes?' while we were already on our way to the park. The big brother said 'If you ask for them now, surely we didn't bring them.' Luckily, the shoes were already in the car.

When we arrived at the park and everyone was out the car. The big brother realised he didn't bring his shoes. He didn't even wear them when he walked to the car at home. Of course, as a cruel aunty, I laughed out loud. Then, he started blaming his father. The story ended when he had to walk on barefoot.

We tried to find him a pair of shoes. But there wasn't any extra pair of shoes in the car.
What a funny boy?!

p.s. Today is Portfolio Day.

Pinterest

Interesting to me.

I love pinterest ever since I discovered it. Seriously, I'm kind of addicted to it. In a good way of course.

So yeah. This is the link to my pinterest.

But yeah, I pinned mostly on home decor, architecture and fashion. I know it's kind of weird since I'm so not fashionable. It's just something that interesting for me. So, don't judge me. If you know me, I'm sure you know that what ever I pinned didn't reflects me. LOL.

Hope you find something interesting.

Almost.

Assalamualaikum. :)

So, (that is how I start my post with) here I am. In International Islamic University, struggling to the end of first semester. Yes, almost the end. We still got Portfolio Day and examination. All classes are over now. I'm so glad. The very last class was this evening, History and Theory of Architecture. It is called History and Theory of Architecture, but I feel that we learn mostly about history. Never mind. It's an interesting subject anyway.

Let me tell you guys a bit about my first semester as degree student in IIUM. The basic thing you should know, I'm currently studying in Bachelor of Science (Architectural Studies). It's also known as Architecture Part 1. It's just part 1. So, there is part 2. The other thing you should know is IIUM got a lot of University Requirement Courses. In case you are going to study in IIUM, you should prepare yourself. Some people couldn't graduate just because they failed URC and Co-curriculum.

I'm taking 6 courses this semester. 2 Studio-Based courses are Architectural Design 1 and Architectural Graphic. Others are History and Theory of Architecture, Building, Construction and Material, Quran, Sunnah and Built Environment and last but not least, Land Surveying. I'm taking any URC yet. Even tough I always believe that QSBE is actually more to URC than Kulliyah Requirement Courses. Of course, it's very good to study QSBE because it's a balance. I'm also taking Study Circle 1 or Halaqah 1 this semester. It's considered as Co-curriculum in IIUM. Weird, isn't it? And again of course, it's such a good way to balance our knowledge. So, we get both dunya and akhirah.

After taaruf week, we had Taaruf KAED and then Taaruf Archais. Classes started after Taaruf Kaed. Taaruf Kaed was held in conjunction with KAED Fest. The end of KAED Fest was celebrated with Kaed Raya, even tough by that time we were not in month of Syawal anymore. That's why the event was so called '#EhRayalagi?'.

Taaruf Archais was also known as 'Ihya 2012. Basically, it was held to introduce the 1st year students to Archais (the society for the department of architecture). It wasn't held 5 days straight like Taaruf Kaed. The activities in 'Ihya 2012 were held mostly at nights and weekend so they won't disturb our classes. One of the activities is Project O.

Project O. This sculpture was made by my group for Project O where we were asked to make it based on any famous architect that we know. We chose Frank Ghery and his deconstruction thing. You can google him. He's famous anyway.

Then, I couldn't recall any other activities other than Archais Annual Grand Dinner. So for the dinner, we dressed up. But we didn't really follow the kind of dress code where we actually need to wear something to show what are we going to be if we are not architecture students. Some said 'if we are not becoming architects' theme. If. I didn't know. I thought about it. I couldn't relate with what I'm going to wear, so I wore a simple pink dress. It wasn't overwhelming at all.

I sat at table 22. :)

The whole semester went quite well despite of all the pain from the critic session, sleepless nights and much much more. It's a journey. A journey to a better future. So, what else can I do except bear with all that things. Of course I have lot of thing to share. But yeah, you might be bored reading my blog.

Thanks for reading, anyway!

Rude

Assalamualaikum. Hi there! As usual, life will be much much busier.

Never mind. Bear with it. I'm gonna be strong!

Today, I just want to share a story. A short one.

Last Wednesday, me and roommates went to a shopping mall somewhere in Gombak. Just because we wanted to buy things that we ran out of. And yeah, we did some shopping. After done with shopping, we quickly wanted to go back to campus. One of my roommates and I went to find the auto pay station to pay our parking ticket. Once we done with the auto pay station, we wanted to go to where we parked our rental car. So, we needed to wait for the elevator.

The elevator was so slow maybe because it stopped at every level. Never mind. We got it. Once the elevator opened, we waited for some people before we went into the elevator. One middle-aged man was controlling the buttons of the elevator. When I came in, suddenly I stuck between the doors ( I mean 'pintu lif'). I was like 'Eh, eh, eh!'. Of course I was panicked. So it was just for a while, the elevator opened again and I went in and stood at the corner of the elevator.

But then, this old man and his friend laughed. They laughed so loud. The old guy said to his friend 'Eh, did you see that!'. I was like 'what's wrong with this man?'. He did not say sorry for making me stuck. How rude is that?

Usually when I'm in an elevator and I'm the one whose controlling the buttons, I will definitely apologize for not pressing the right button or for making people stuck between the doors.

Oh, you are an old man. And you are that rude. I wonder how you teach your children about manners if you don't do one simple thing which is apologizing to people even tough you don't know them. I bet maybe your parents never teach you, right?

I stood quietly in the elevator but I was actually very angry that time. Only the next morning, I talked about it with my roommate who was with me that time. She actually as angry as I am.

Moral of the story : Apologize when you did something wrong and don't laugh at people. It's so rude.

That's all.
Wassalam.
